Langley MP Mark Warawa Elected Chair of the Standing Committee on Environment
LANGLEY, BC – Mark Warawa, Conservative Member of Parliament Langley, today expressed his appreciation and gratitude for his election as the House of Commons Chair of the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development.
“I am very pleased with the being elected Chair of the Environment Committee,” says Warawa. “The Chair is elected by all members of the committee, so it is an honour to have been elected.”
“The committee is responsible for providing the reports that will guide the decisions of Parliament,” says Warawa. “This includes conducting legislative reviews as well as leading fact finding missions with the goal of providing a safer, healthier environment and sustainable development for Canadians.
Committee Chairs have procedural, administrative and representative responsibilities. Chairs preside over committee meetings and oversee committee work, and have considerable administrative responsibilities such as deciding on agendas and procedures, and for managing the committee’s budget. The Chair must also represent the Government of Canada on international panels and meetings, and acts as the committee’s main spokesperson to other parliamentarians, the media and society.
The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development consists of 12 MP’s from different parties. Warawa will lead the committee in developing a plan for their fall agenda and is looking forward to a productive session starting in September. “This could include the continuance of the legislative review of the Species At Risk Act as well as a review of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
