Getting tough on white collar crime

9/17/2009

White collar crimes, like fraud and identity theft, pose a serious threat to the financial security and prosperity of Canadian families.

Today, our Conservative government is announcing new measures to help get tough on criminals who commit white collar crimes, while also taking action to protect victims. This includes serious consequences for criminals convicted of fraud, stiffer sentences for offenders and the requirement that courts consider allowing the victims financial compensation.

Victims of white collar crime have spoken clearly in asking for these measures. Our government is working to ensure that our laws protect honest, law-abiding Canadians, not those who take advantage of them.

By contrast, Michael Ignatieff and the Liberals seem to want to protect criminals instead of victims. When our government brought in legislation that would have punished criminals who take advantage of Canadians, the Liberals gutted our bill, putting the criminals’ interests ahead of their victims’.

While Michael Ignatieff and the Liberals push for an unwanted, unneeded election, our Conservative government is working to protect law-abiding Canadians from white collar crime.
