New riding boundaries confirmed for 2015 federal election

Langley, BC—On Wednesday, Langley MP Mark Warawa announced that the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for British Columbia has completed its work of redrawing Langley’s federal electoral district. The independent commission was created in February 2012 with a mandate to set new boundaries so that each electoral district contains roughly the same number of people.

“I am pleased with the new report,” said Warawa. “The commission listened to most of the community’s recommendations, which included a name change for both ridings while keeping almost all of the Township of Langley within a single riding. These new changes will better reflect the interests of Langley than the original proposal.”

On March 5, 2013, the Langley MP testified before a committee to present changes to the previous riding proposal. At the committee, Warawa requested that the electoral boundaries be redrawn to better suit municipal boundaries. Warawa also asked that the name of electoral district of Fort Langley—Aldergrove be changed to Langley—Aldergrove, and that the name of the Electoral district of Cloverdale—Langley be changed to Cloverdale—West Langley.

The new riding of Langley—Aldergrove will include much of the current and part of West Abbotsford. The new Cloverdale—Langley City riding will join Langley City and a smaller portion of Willoughby, with the City of Cloverdale.

The Langley MP also announced his intention to run in one of the two new Langley ridings in the next Federal Election. “I am happy to announce that I will be running in the new riding of Langley—Aldergrove,” said Warawa. “Until the next federal election, I will continue to serve as Member of Parliament in the current riding of Langley.”

 “I would like to thank the members of the Electoral Boundaries Commission for their work,” said Warawa. “This was a long, complex process, involving several overlapping districts, and they listened carefully to our recommendations.”

The current boundary will be in effect until the next federal election in 2015.
