Warawa Appointed to Shadow Cabinet as Critic for Seniors Portfolio

11/21/2015

Today, MP Mark Warawa was appointed to the Official Opposition’s Shadow Cabinet as Critic for the Seniors portfolio.

“I am deeply honoured to receive this role in Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition,” said the LangleyAldergrove MP. Seniors play an important role in our families, communities and workplaces. They helped build our country and continue to contribute to its success. As a senior myself and having worked with seniors throughout my role as a Member of Parliament and at ICBC, I am convinced that a high quality of life for seniors depends a great deal on helping them to stay active, engaged and informed. I look forward to working with seniors across the country to keep the Government accountable to meeting their needs.”

“Canadian seniors remain a high priority for Conservatives,” continued Warawa. Under the previous government, a Minister of State was appointed to specifically address the needs and concerns of seniors. The current Liberal Government has removed this role. My job as Critic will be to help ensure that seniors are not overlooked by the current government.

Canada’s population is in the middle of a fundamental shift. In 2012, almost one in seven Canadians was a senior; by 2030, that number is projected to jump to nearly one in four.

“Canada’s change in demographics will present new opportunities for our society,” noted Warawa. “It will also present challenges, to which the Government of Canada must demonstrate a commitment to ensure both the well-being of seniors and Canada’s future prosperity.
